Fwd: When the sheriff is at the door

useful food for thought

How to Tap Your Inner Strength    Rabbi Harold S. Kushner

W e are bombarded with news reports of tragedies. Fires, floods and earthquakes make headlines as do the stories of people losing their homes, jobs and nest eggs due to the devastating turmoil in the financial world.

For help making sense of it all, Bottom Line/Personal spoke to Rabbi Harold S. Kushner, whose seminal book, When Bad Things Happen to Good People, has helped millions.
His wise and compassionate counsel on enduring tragedy... what to do about anger... and how to move forward...

GUT RESPONSE

Most of us go through life with the belief that the world should be predictable, fair and understandable. Then when we suffer a seemingly unendurable shock -- the death of a loved one... loss of a home to fire or flood... or financial devastation -- we feel lost.
The psychological blow may be a bigger problem for many people to overcome than the actual damage to property or physical health or other personal loss.

If victims are unwilling to relinquish the idea that the world is understandable, they feel a desperate need to make sense of what has happened. They respond to that need in different ways -- blaming, theologizing or philosophizing.

Blaming. Some people blame themselves and explain the disaster in terms of their own behavior ("I never should have put my money in stocks"). This approach leaves them feeling guilty... but with the consolation that they are not powerless in a world that is beyond their control.

Others spend their time looking to lay blame on others. Why were US banks allowed to run amok? Why wasn't there more government oversight?

Theologizing. Others reconcile themselves to what has happened through the theological belief that the world is run according to a good purpose -- but one that is too complicated for human beings to be able to explain all of the details at the time.

Example: Was this the wake-up call America needed to adequately address its financial shortfalls?
Some people try to hold on to that belief but lose it if they do not find a compensating good event occurring for each bad event that happens during the rest of their lives.

Philosophizing. A third way to react to disasters is to accept them philosophically as an unpredictable part of life. They may strike anyone at any time and cannot be explained rationally.

HELPING OTHERS

Regardless of their attempts to explain the disaster that has occurred, people have a remarkable capacity to go on with their lives and mobilize their inner strength to respond positively.
Examples: I once spoke to 5,000 people who gathered in East St. Louis to rebuild their city after a catastrophic flood. When asked to discuss the religious meaning of the flood, I told them it could be found in the way they all helped one another and in their willingness to work together to overcome the effects of the disaster.
On the morning after 9/11, New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani reported that there were too many volunteers at the disaster site. Meanwhile, blood donors lined the streets for blocks outside the city's trauma centers.
Human beings tend to demonstrate the spiritual power to transcend disaster both on a mass scale and as individuals. They do this when they band together to recover from earthquakes or floods and when they strive to carry on with family life while dealing with personal tragedies, such as brain-damaged children or parents with Alzheimer's.

WHY ME?

Those who cope effectively have a strong sense of self-esteem. When life deals them crushing blows, they tell themselves, I can get over it.
Conversely, people who have learned to think of themselves as "no good" regard disasters as justified punishment, and they lack the optimism to build a new life out of the ruins of the old.
Victims of disaster often ask, "Why me?" To respond effectively, you must understand that it is not really a question but a cry of pain.
Best: Reassure them by saying, "You are a good person... and what happened was not punishment for something you did." Disaster victims want consolation, not explanations or exhortations.

Don't tell them to stop complaining and get on with their lives.

Do show them that you care by hugging them and holding their hands.

Don't leave them feeling abandoned in their state of need.

Do sit with them quietly and show empathy.

Allow them to grieve for their loss at their own pace. After a serious trauma, people are entitled to at least one year of not being their normal selves. After a year, you might suggest therapy only if they are frustrated by the pace of their own recoveries, not because you are in a hurry to see them happy.

As a born german -I am a proud Canadian and believe that this is a good letter . Stop the political correctness. expensive nonsense which devalues our country's values.

Canadians -time to take our country back

"Ships in the harbour are safe, but that's not what ships are built for." William Shedd

A Letter to the Editor (excellent letter)

So many letter writers have explained how this land is made up of immigrants.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people why today's Canadian

is not willing to accept the new kind of immigrant any longer.

Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to Canada,

people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in Halifax and be documented.

Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground.

They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times.

They made learning English a primary rule in their new Canadian households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home. They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture.

Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labour laws to protect them. All they had were the skills, craftsmanship and desire they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out.Canadians fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France, Japan, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Sweden, Poland and so many other places. None of these first generation Canadians ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Canadians fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the
Emperor of Japan. They were defending the Freedom as one people.

When we liberated France, no-one in those villages was looking for the
Ukrainian-Canadian or the German-Canadian or the Irish-Canadian.

The people of France saw only Canadians.

And we carried one flag that represented our country.

Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up
another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would
have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here.
These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be a Canadian.

They stirred the melting pot into one red and white bowl..

And here we are in 2009 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges.

Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes a Canadian passport and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country.

I'm sorry, that's not what being a Canadian is all about. Canadians have been very open-hearted and open-minded regarding immigrants, whether they were fleeing poverty, dictatorship, persecution, or whatever else makes us think of those aforementioned immigrants who truly did ADOPT our country, and our flag and our morals and our customs. And left their wars, hatred, and divisions behind.. I believe that the immigrants who landed in Canada in the early 1900s deserve better than that for the toil, hard work and sacrifice those legally searching for a better life.

I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags, fighting foreign battles on our soil, making Canadians change to suit their religions and cultures, and wanting to change our countries fabric by claiming discrimination when we do not give in to their demands.

Its about time we get real and stand up for our forefathers rights.

We are CANADIAN Lest we forget it!!!

I am a Citizen of this Country & proud of it!

NO MORE POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
NO MORE not saying CHRISTMAS in
stores and our schools!
MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!
I Want my Canada of birth BACK !!!

P. S. -- Please pass this on to everyone you know!!!

KEEP THIS LETTER MOVING!!

Hope this letter is read by millions of people all across Canada!!

insights into the war of the sexes

smile

Bra Shopping
A man walked into the ladies department of a Macy's, and walked up to the woman behind the counter and said, "I'd like to buy a bra for my wife"

What type of bra?" asked the clerk.

"Type?" inquires the man. "There is more than one type?"

"Look around," said the saleslady, as she showed a sea of bras in every shape, size, color and material.

"Actually, even with all of this variety, there are really only three types of bras," replied the salesclerk.

Confused, the man asked what the types were.

The saleslady replied "The Catholic type, the, Salvation Army type, and the Baptist type. Which one do you need?"<

Still confused the man asked, "What is the difference between them?"

The lady responded, "It is all really quite simple. The Catholic type supports the masses, the Salvation Army type lifts up the fallen, and the Baptist type makes mountains out of mole hills."

Relief at Your Fingertips

Michael Reed Gach, PhD
Acupressure Institute

Y ou've probably heard of acupuncture, but there's something similar that you can do yourself -- no needles involved -- called acupressure. Acupressure can alleviate many physical, mental and emotional problems in only a few minutes -- and it is free.
Acupressure involves stimulating acupoints on the body with fingertips or knuckles and is based on the principles of acupuncture, an ancient healing technique used by practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The acupoints often have ancient descriptive names, such as "Joining the Valley" and "Mind Clearing." Acupressure increases blood flow to the treated area and triggers the release of endorphins, pain-relieving brain chemicals.
Here are the acupressure techniques for various health problems. Unless otherwise noted, daily acupressure sessions, three times a day, are the best way to relieve a temporary or chronic problem.

ARTHRITIS PAIN

Joining the Valley is a truly amazing acupoint because it can relieve arthritis pain anywhere in the body.
Location: In the webbing between the thumb and index finger, at the highest spot of the muscle when the thumb and index finger are brought close together.
What to do: Rhythmically squeeze the acupoint. As you're squeezing, place the side of your hand that is closest to the little finger on your thigh or a tabletop. Apply pressure in the webbing as you press downward. This allows you to angle more deeply into the point, increasing the benefits.
Also good for: Headache, toothache, hangover, hay fever symptoms, constipation.
Caution: This point is forbidden for pregnant women because its stimulation can cause premature contraction in the uterus.

MEMORY PROBLEMS

The Mind Clearing acupoints are for improving recall instantly -- for example, when you have forgotten a name or gone to the supermarket without your shopping list. Location: One finger width (about one-half inch) directly above the center of each eyebrow.
What to do: Gently place your right thumb above your right eyebrow and your middle fingertip above the eyebrow on the left side. Hold very gently. You should feel a slight dip or indentation in the bone structure -- the acupoints on both sides are in the dip. Press the indentation very lightly, hold and breathe deeply. After a minute or two, you'll experience more mental clarity and sharper memory.

LOWER BACK PAIN

To help prevent and relieve lower back pain, practice this exercise for one minute three times a day. You can do it standing or sitting.
Location: Place the backs of your hands against your lower back, about one inch outside the spine.
What to do: Briskly rub your hands up and down -- about three inches up and six inches down -- using the friction to create heat in your lower back. If you're doing the technique correctly, you'll need to breathe deeply to sustain the vigorous rubbing, and you'll break out in a slight sweat.
Also good for: Food cravings, especially sugar cravings, chronic fatigue, sexual problems, chills, phobias and fibromyalgia symptoms.

EMOTIONAL UPSET

The Inner Gate acupoint can reduce emotional upset -- such as anxiety, depression and irritability -- in two to three minutes.
Location: On the inner side of the forearm, three finger widths up from the center of the wrist crease, in between two thick tendons.
What to do: Place your thumb on the point and your fingers directly behind the outside of the forearm between the two bones. Squeeze in slowly and firmly, hold for two to three minutes, breathing deeply. Repeat on the other arm for the same amount of time.
Also good for: Carpal tunnel syndrome, insomnia, indigestion and nausea.

COLDS AND FLU

If you think you're about to get a cold or flu, stimulating the Heavenly Rejuvenation acupoint may prevent infection.
Location: On the shoulders, midway between the base of the neck and the outside of the shoulders, one-half inch below the top of the shoulders, just above the tip of the shoulder blades.
What to do: There are two ways to stimulate this point...
Curving your fingers, hook your right hand on your right shoulder and your left hand on your left shoulder. You also can use your fingers on your opposite shoulder, which may be easier. With your fingertips, firmly press the point and take three slow, deep breaths.
If you don't have the flexibility to perform the first technique... lie down on your back, on a firm mattress or carpeted floor, with your knees bent and feet on the floor as close to your buttocks as possible. Bring your hands above your head, and rest the backs of your hands on the floor beside or above your head. Inhale and lift up your pelvis, pressing your feet against the floor to assist the lift. The higher your pelvis, the more weight will be transferred onto your shoulders, stimulating the acupoint. Hold this posture for one minute, taking long, slow, deep breaths, with your eyes closed. Lower your pelvis, and rest for three minutes.
Also good for: Nervous tension, stiff neck, high fever, chills, shoulder aches and irritability.

INSOMNIA

The acupoints Calm Sleep and Joyful Sleep -- on the outer and inner ankles -- can help relieve insomnia. Use these acupressure points whenever you want to deeply relax and sleep better.
Location: Calm Sleep is in the first indentation below the outer anklebone. Joyful Sleep is directly below the inside of the anklebone, in a slight indentation.
What to do: Place your thumb on one side of your ankle and your fingers on the other, and press firmly. If you're on the right spot, it will be slightly sore. Hold for two minutes, breathing deeply. Repeat on the other ankle. Do this again if you still are having trouble sleeping or if you wake up.

HEADACHES

The acupoints Gates of Consciousness relieve a tension headache or migraine.
Location: Underneath the base of your skull to either side of your spine, about three to four inches apart, depending on the size of your head.
What to do: Using your fingers, thumbs or knuckles, press the points under the base of your skull. At the same time, slowly tilt your head back so that the angle of your head relaxes your neck muscles. Press forward (toward your throat), upward (underneath the base of your skull) and slightly inward, angling the pressure toward the center of your brain. Continue to apply pressure for two minutes, breathing.
Also good for: Neck pain, insomnia, high blood pressure.

Travel Abroad... Even With a Weak Dollar

T he dollar has lost a great deal of value compared with many other currencies in recent years. Example: The dollar has lost about one-third of its value against the euro since 2002.
But don't let the reduced value of the dollar stop you from foreign travel. How to get more from your dollars abroad...

Check exchange rates. The dollar performs much better against the currencies of some nations than others. Recent examples: Guatemala, Hungary, Morocco, Thailand. The list fluctuates continually.

Useful: The Yahoo! Finance Web site (http://finance.yahoo.com/currency) provides current exchange rates.

Visit nations that use the dollar. The Bahamas and several other nations in the Caribbean, such as Belize and the Cayman Islands, use the dollar as a currency or peg their own currency to the dollar.

Book travel costs in dollars. Many tour organizations and cruise lines take payment in dollars with payment made in the US on more favorable terms than abroad. Also: Similar savings often can be obtained by booking a rental car in Europe from the US before you leave home.

Travel off-season. Expenses for the same resorts and destinations can be much cheaper.

Travel to Eastern Europe instead of Western Europe. There's a lot of history in post-Communist Eastern Europe, but costs remain much lower than in the tourist areas and major cities of Western Europe.

Visit the countryside instead of cities. Costs are typically lower in rural and suburban towns of foreign nations than in their big cities. Take day trips to the big cities if you wish.

"For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again…."1

Many years ago, in much younger days, I used to work in construction. On a construction site in which I was in charge I made what to me was a whopping error and was scared to death to tell my boss. Fortunately for me when I did tell him, he simply said, "Dick, the man who never made a mistake never made anything!"

What a relief it was to know my "error" was forgiven! Then we set about to correct my mistake.

I think it was Robert Schuller who said, "A high jumper never knows how high he can jump until he reaches a failure point." That's a good point, for we too will never know how high we can reach in fulfilling our personal goals until we also reach a failure point.

In fact, we probably learn a lot more through our failures than we do through our successes. The important thing when we fail is to get up, learn from our mistake, and go on to achieve better things. As another has said, "Not failure, but low aim is crime."

Fwd: Daily Dose - Don't pick up the phone

Daily Dose

Cell phone dangers continue to add up

Dear Friend,

Let me let you in on a little secret. Forget cigarettes and secondhand smoke. If you want to know what will cause of the death of our society, look no further than that little piece of technology you think you can't live without: your cell phone.

I'm not even talking about the death of social etiquette -- though more than a few cell phone users could use a class in how to act appropriately in public. (Maybe I'll write a book on the subject.)

No, I'm talking about the very real danger of propping a microwave-generating piece of hardware less than an inch from your brain for hours on end, day in and day out. Plenty of neurosurgeons have gone on the record saying that they never place their cell phones directly to their ears.

And when you look at the case against them, it's no wonder! Consider this...
  • In 2005, European researchers linked a decade of cell phone use to as much as a four-percent increase in the likelihood of developing permanent, brain-damaging tumors of the auditory nerve.

  • A 2002 Finnish study linked the type of radiation emitted by cell phones to adverse effects on brain tissue.

  • Research on British males theorizes that cell phone use could be the cause of Britain's precipitous decline in male fertility.
Some doctors even speculate Sen. Ted Kennedy's brain tumor may have been caused by excessive cell phone use. And that's just been after 10 years or so. Imagine the threat our kids and grandkids will be facing 15, 20, and 50 years from now. It's chilling.

Of course, the warnings are falling on deaf ears -- or at least on ears that are covered up by a little piece of tumor-causing technology. More likely, people don't want to hear about the dangers because they think they can't live without their precious cell phones.

The media isn't helping matters, either. Instead of making these very real, very life- threatening dangers front-page news, this is the headline you're more likely to see: "Cell phone elbow: New sign of the times."

Yes, you read that right. The major cell phone danger plastering headlines is that it could be a pain in your elbow. Well, news like this is just a pain in my you-know-what.

Is it a legitimate condition? I'm sure it is. If you do any action repetitively enough, you're going to wear down the muscles, ligaments or tendons involved.

But if there's any silver lining to this cellular cloud, it's this: Maybe -- just maybe -- in an effort to avoid "cell phone elbow," people will be less likely to hold these "cancer boxes" up to their ears.

The easiest option is to use the speakerphone option on your cell phone. You could also get a Bluetooth earpiece or a wired headset with a ferrite bead. Of course, the best option of all is just to not use a cell phone to begin with.

When life imitates art

While cell phone use continues to grow in popularity, an old habit that was once a teen rite of passage is on the decline: smoking. One study says this could be because there are less people shown smoking in today's movies.

The lead author of the study, Dr. James Sargent, a pediatrics professor at Dartmouth, says that "reducing smoking in the movies probably helped to reduce rates of smoking in kids."

Talk about wishful thinking.

Dr. Sargent fails to take into account that there's not just less smoking in movies. There's less smoking in day-to-day life in general. Kids of earlier generations grew up with their parents and grandparents and many of the adults in their lives smoking -- not just on screen. Smoking wasn't necessarily seen as glamorous. It was merely a fact of adult behavior.

That is, until every doctor under the sun started to demonize it.

Thankfully, the researchers themselves acknowledge that the study cannot prove a direct correlation between the drop in smokers portrayed in movies and the drop in teen smoking. Then again, if the research is right, maybe we need to lobby for movies to show fewer people using cell phones.

Calling on you to hang up your cell phone,

William Campbell Douglass II, M.D.

4 tips for battling stress

They won't make stress go away, and they're not exactly the equivalent of a two-week Mediterranean cruise, but they'll help.

GET ANGRY

When you bottle things up, you're just adding to the pile of cumulative stress. I'm not saying you need to flip out and scream at everyone around you, but when the going gets tough, it doesn't mean that you should just nod quietly and accept your bad luck. By asserting yourself and your opinion without losing control, you're actually venting stress.

SHIFT YOUR FOCUS

Get a hobby, or don't be shy about throwing yourself into the one that you already have. By concentrating your mind on the thing that brings you the most joy, you're actually sloughing off stress, and giving your mind and body the time to recover. It's like a mini- vacation.

PUT THE CLOCK TO WORK FOR YOU

Nothing's more stressful than a deadline, and it only gets worse the closer it gets. If you can turn yourself in a better time manager, even the biggest project can be tackled with less stress.

LAUGH OR CRY

Yup, another cliché. But like so many, it's true. Both laughing and crying are enormously effective ways to vent stress. Emotions are there for a reason: use them. Bottling them up leads to more stress.
